Do stores go back and check surveillance videos to find out what happened to their missing inventory?

Stores like circuit city, or best buy. It seems that to go through months of surveillance videos to find out what happened to a laptop or camera would be too cumbersome. Think about it, all those cameras, and you have to check each one’s recordings. Or, do these stores outsource these tasks to different companies? It seems to me that surveillance videos are more of a phsycological deterent than a real phorensics tool, but what do you think, or know?
