In the state of california is it illegal to have a hidden camera in a bathroom?

Can you answer Kimbo13’s question about Surveillance?:

Some pervert was caught at my work for having a hidden camera in our ladies bathroom. He looked like he was being arrested as I left work. What happens now?

Can the people being violated press charges and how well would it hold up in court if there is sufficient evidence of this?

Surveillance Feedback: check the law and check with your local law enforcement officials or an attorney for the specifics in your state.

Surveillance Feedback: Wow that is a pretty big situation.. if i were u i would look up the laws in cali and see what they state.. if you were one of the unlucky persons in the video if you happen to find out, then maybe consider pressing charges depending on the laws

Surveillance Feedback: Jail time maybe or perhaps just a stiff fine of
3 or 4 thousand dollars. I think that would be
illgal in all states. Some of your co-workers
should take him into the supply room and
teach him a lesson and then turn him over to
    the police.

Surveillance Feedback: Its illegal in any state to place cameras in “places of privacy” - mainly bathrooms and homes - without the owners or the publics knowledge.

It is legal to place hidden cameras in public (just not in the bathrooms) and in places of business (like a gas station or wal-mart). I also would imagine that some drug task force unit might be able to place a hidden camera anywhere they suspected drug activity or maybe even terrorist activity might take place.

As far as the actual charges I don’t know the technical name but it’ll be something along the lines of invasion of personal privacy and possibly sexual deviance since it was in a bathroom.

I heard a true story about a guy who actually hid in a portopotty with a camera and when he was finally caught he had to registor as a sex offender.
