By Mike E Scott

A video surveillance system is important on college campuses. It assists to provide security for the diverse assortment of facilities on the campus as well as to protect students, who sometimes make long journeys within the campus ground at night. However, before installing video surveillance cameras on the campus, there are issues to be addressed. What security system is on ground? What are the security concerns on the campus? How will installing video surveillance cameras fortify security? A few tips about installing video surveillance cameras on campus grounds will address some of these issues:

LOCATION OF INSTALLATION

The location of video surveillance cameras is extremely important to a successful security situation on the campus. Video surveillance cameras are not to be positioned without deep thought. They are effective when they are placed at exits and entrances of buildings, at parking lots, campus stores, cashiers office, sports ground, lobbies, stairways, and at auditoriums.

AIM FOR REMOTE ACCESS

A university campus comprises of dormitories, libraries, sports complexes, school fields, faculty buildings, etc. Since there's a lot of space to cover, the security system to monitor this vast expanse of land must be all-embracing. Remote monitoring enabled through the installation of IP cameras to a video surveillance system will enhance the complex security needs of the campus. Another advantage of an Internet angle to security is that archived footage becomes possible, and this can be used to investigate past criminal and violent act.

PRIVACY

There is no doubt that video surveillance cameras should be installed on public places on college campuses. This assists to deter criminal activities. But the installation should not lead to the invasion of the privacy of those living in the university community. People living on the campuses are usually critical. Their opposition to the installation of system on the basis of invasion of privacy might derail the entire project and the essence of the initiative will be defeated. In other words, keep the privacy of students, lecturers, non-academic staff, and others in mind while putting in place video surveillance cameras. For instance, the cameras should not cover the halls of residence and the staff quarters.

COMPREHENSIVE SECURITY SYSTEM

While the presence of video surveillance system gives the impression that the security situation has been taken care of, this may be an illusion. Security issues are much more complex than that. In other words, the traditional forms of security provision should be maintained to work with the cameras. Campus security personnel and other law enforcement agents should still continue to function. Members of the university community must remain vigilant and ready to take care of their personal security as well.

VIGILANT MONITORING OF CAMERAS

The video surveillance cameras must also be monitored. Thieves and other anti-social elements may want to damage them to prevent their being filmed while they commit criminal activity. The inclement weather may damage cameras which are placed outdoor. This makes it necessary for the cameras to be monitored to facilitate quick detection of damaged parts and quick repair of the cameras. Failure to respond quickly to the damage of video surveillance cameras increases the chances of a break-in by unscrupulous elements.
