Counter Surveillance

By Greg Marston

Learn How to protect your personal and business privacy.

Privacy is a major concern for many people. There are countless ways that others can violate your privacy, but there are only a few ways that you can protect yourself effectively. Counter surveillance is one way to ensure a high level of personal privacy, and it can be accomplished without any special training or overly complicated equipment.

Many people don't understand the reasons why they may need to practice counter surveillance techniques, and the people who need it most are often unfamiliar with the equipment required. One misconception that many people hold is that if you're not doing anything "wrong", you have no reason to worry about being secretly recorded.

Unfortunately, this is not always true. If you are in the process of getting a divorce, are engaged in a custody disagreement, or are having trouble in your marriage, you may be a victim of malicious recording. A jealous or estranged spouse may hire someone to watch or record you, hoping to catch you "in the act", even if you are doing nothing wrong.

It is also possible that a person or group that is not targeting you directly can invade your privacy. You may be subject to surreptitious recording if a friend, neighbor, or relative is under surveillance. For example, if a close friend is involved in a lawsuit, a private investigator may watch your home, hoping to record video or audio of your friend when he visits. Counter surveillance can help you protect your own privacy, as well as the privacy of your guests.

Modern counter surveillance equipment can be used by the average person, and is not costly or complicated. For example, simply being aware of your surroundings is a valuable tool against spying. If you have reason to believe that someone may be watching you, it's wise to check your home, car, and workplace for anything out of the ordinary. Something seemingly innocent, like a dime-sized spot on a wall that wasn't there before, can actually be evidence that an audio bug or hidden camera has been planted.

If you suspect that you may be a target of spying, pay special attention to your phone. If you notice unusual sounds, interference, or static on the line while you're making calls, it may be a hint that someone is tapping your phone.

If you are beginning to notice signs of spying in your surroundings, you should consider investing in some counter surveillance equipment. Today's equipment is easier to use, more reliable, and less costly than ever before. Even a novice can easily learn to use the right equipment to scan for hidden cameras or audio bugs in their home.

If you take your privacy seriously, counter surveillance is worth the time and effort it takes to learn. If you know that your privacy is being compromised, counter surveillance can help you put an end to the prying and allow you to begin living your private life in private once again.
