Video Surveillance - Not Just For Retail Security Anymore

By Steve Mcneal

Video Surveillance is not just for security. While most people think "security" when they see security cameras, business owners now think "productivity." Certain efficiencies are achieved by monitoring a business operation, and cameras are continuously providing this monitoring allowing management to be there at all times. A transportation facility monitors the receiving docks and truck traffic, the manufacturing facility is monitoring the quality control line 24 x 7, and many businesses observe their employees as much as customers with employee theft attributing for more than 70% of all inventory losses.

The key benefits of a CCTV system to business management are:

  • Constant and real-time monitoring of the facility and processes

  • Recorded events for measuring productivity

  • Remote access to the facility through the internet

Numerous businesses have already seen the benefit of not only accessing live feeds of cameras, but they also have been utilizing the recordings from these cameras on Digital Video Recorders (DVRs) to provide feedback on the manufacturing process, quality control inspection, and product shipment confirmation. A Business Observation System. is an essential business tool developed to provide a digital video view and record of facilities management, product manufacturing, service facilities, and transportation areas of the business.

Business owners want an increase in production and overall productivity in service and manufacturing facilities. A large auto service facility monitors all service bays and has increased their service hours billed. It has also attributed to overall customer satisfaction with service agents able to provide customers instant reports on where their auto is located. A trucking facility is able to register all trucks entering the facility and effectively manage the truck service areas." Customers are using web-based CCTV systems to demonstrate product assembly or service and broadcasting the live video straight to their customers. Manufacturing facilities are monitoring the stages of production of a product and use it for a management tool and then the product management department uses the video system to broadcast live camera feeds to a customer on the web.

In these business observation scenarios, no two businesses are alike and a good Business CCTV system is designed to be flexible to address the various applications. Every business facility has its own unique construction. The subsequent demands of the various applications - the number and kind of cameras needed, the most appropriate recording features - are not going to be the same from one business to another. CCTV systems can integrate a variety of camera systems. Depending on the complexity of the business facility and the requirements,a Business CCTV system can range anywhere from a simple Four Channel Digital Video Recorder (DVR) to a 32 Channel DVR.

Internet Remote access through the LAN and the Web to the Video cameras is a key feature and requirement for the Business CCTV system. The business office is expanding and with the technology available rarely is someone ever out of contact. Even when business owners and managers are out of the office, there is a need to remain connected. For business that have multiple facilities in diverse locations, there is a need to know what is going on at each. A Business CCTV system can allow management to watch their facility 24x7 from any location, home or in their office. At any time and from anywhere, business owners and managers can now look in on and observe what is taking place at a specific facility via a Business CCTV System remote access. All that is necessary is an Internet connection.

Business Observation CCTV is an growing market and will continue to advance as business owners are achieving much more control of their everyday business through constant observation. Video surveillance is a major tool today for facilities management and a key component of businesses today.
